Nestled in the bustling heart of Panama City, Chabad, Panama, shines brightly as a vital center for Jewish life in Central America. Recently, the New York Jewish Travel Guide had the privilege of conversing with Rabbi Mendi Karniel, the spiritual leader of Chabad Panama, unraveling the vibrant tapestry of Jewish culture and community thriving in Panama.
Rabbi Karniel, originally from Israel, embarked on his Panama journey over eight years ago. His path meandered through diverse international landscapes, from India to Hong Kong, before finding its destination in Panama alongside his wife, a native of France. What began as an invitation from the Ashkenazi community to fulfill their spiritual needs blossomed into the establishment of Chabad Panama—a nurturing haven where Jews of all backgrounds find solace and kinship.
Today, Chabad Panama encompasses not only its central hub in Panama City but also satellite centers in Bocas del Toro, Boquete, and Playa Venao, catering to the varied Jewish populations across the nation. Rabbi Karniel estimates the Jewish community in Panama to comprise around 4,000 families, encompassing approximately 15,000 individuals—a number steadily growing as new members integrate and families’ flourish.
At the core of Chabad Panama’s mission lies a steadfast commitment to inclusivity and outreach. The Alef Klum program, tailored for Jewish children not enrolled in Jewish schools, epitomizes this dedication. Through interactive lessons, kosher meals, and bar or bat mitzvah preparations, Rabbi Karniel ensures every child nurtures a deep connection to their heritage and community.
Shabbat at Chabad Panama pulsates with energy, as sixty to eighty locals converge for weekly services. Throughout the calendar, the center hosts an array of events and festivities, from grand menorah lightings during Hanukkah to lively Purim readings held in restaurants and office spaces.
Chabad Panama’s influence extends much beyond its geographical borders, thanks to programs like the Shabbat meal delivery program that Rebbetzin Braha Karniel started. In response to the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, this program was launched to provide Shabbat meals to struggling families, offering solace and sustenance to numerous individuals facing adversity.
In addition to its local initiatives, Chabad Panama serves as a linchpin in fostering unity and collaboration across the broader Latin American Jewish community. The recent Latin America Kinus Banquet, held in Panama City, convened thirty representatives from eleven Spanish-speaking countries, underscoring the significance of solidarity and shared aspirations in advancing Jewish life across the region.
As the joyous Passover holiday approaches, Chabad Panama throws open its doors to guests from across the globe, extending warm hospitality and unforgettable experiences. Guests can effortlessly register for meals and accommodations via the center’s website, phone, email, or WhatsApp, ensuring a seamless and joyous holiday celebration for all.
In the bustling streets of Panama City, amid its vibrant tapestry of cultures, Chabad Panama stands tall as a beacon of Jewish life, embracing all who seek connection, community, and tradition. Through unwavering dedication and tireless endeavors, Chabad Panama continues to enrich the lives of Jews locally and beyond, embodying timeless values of unity, compassion, and resilience.
