I would like to share the inspiring journey of Rabbi Leon Benarroch, whose remarkable life story spans continents and decades. Born in Casablanca, Morocco, Rabbi Benarroch embarked on a transformative chapter at the age of 15 when he traveled to England to study at the renowned Sunderland yeshivas in Gateshead, Scotland. Under the mentorship of esteemed scholars, he immersed himself in rigorous religious and academic training, showcasing exceptional dedication and diligence.

Rabbi Benarroch’s early years in Casablanca were filled with fond memories. He attended La Cepes, a local school, and lived near the port and ocean, where he enjoyed daily swims. He reflected on his close-knit family and the vibrant Jewish community that played a significant role in shaping his early life. His grandfather was a significant influence, taking him to school and synagogue and nurturing his interest in religion from a young age.

Rabbi Benarroch embraced the chance to study at the Sunderland Yeshiva in Britain, founded by Rabbi Hirsch Hurwitz, after Rabbi Zahn visited Morocco post-World War II. With unwavering enthusiasm, Rabbi Benarroch left Morocco and joyfully embarked on this educational journey in Glasgow.

After five years at the Sunderland Yeshiva, Rabbi Benarroch continued his studies at the Etz Chaim Yeshiva in London, specializing in shechita (ritual slaughter) and training as a sofer (scribe). His dedication to his studies and religious duties was unwavering, even receiving a small stipend that he used to buy stamps to send letters to his parents back in Morocco.

It was in Glasgow that Rabbi Benarroch met his future wife, a Glasgow native. They married, and he began serving as the Rabbi at Garnethill Synagogue in 1974. For the next eight years, he made significant contributions to the community, fostering spiritual growth and strengthening communal bonds. He recalled handling an average of 500 chickens a week for a large congregation and special occasions, a testament to his dedication and the community’s trust in his services.

In 1982, Rabbi Benharroch moved to Bournemouth to serve the Jewish community. His role evolved to include responsibilities in education, kashrut (Jewish dietary laws), and shechita. Serving a congregation of about 2,000 people in a town known as a popular resort destination and retirement center, he continued his unwavering devotion to the community. He fondly remembered the diverse and vibrant community, including visitors from around the world.

In 1992, Rabbi Benarroch became the Rabbi of the Porat Yosef Moroccan Hebrew Congregation. This role allowed him to connect deeply with his roots and preserve the unique traditions and customs of Moroccan Jewry. Leading a small congregation of 50 to 60 members from Yemen, Iraq, and Morocco, he adeptly transitioned from Ashkenazi to Sephardic tunes and rituals. His leadership was characterized by a steadfast dedication to preserving cultural heritage and fostering a strong sense of community.

Reflecting on his journey, Rabbi Benarroch emphasized the importance of his mentors and the lessons he learned along the way. His grandfather in Casablanca was a significant influence, always encouraging his religious curiosity. Rabbi Benharroch’s legacy is one of profound influence on the communities he served. He inspired many to strengthen their commitment to Judaism and to observe Shabbat.

One particularly touching moment was a phone call received after his stroke from someone who credited Rabbi Benarroch with inspiring him to send his son to a yeshiva in Israel. Many congregants approached him for advice and guidance, expressing gratitude for his presence at significant life events, echoing the profound impact he had on their lives.

Rabbi Benarroch’s advice to young, aspiring rabbis emphasizes the importance of maintaining a positive demeanor, fostering happiness within the congregation, and continually learning Torah. He believed in the power of education and dedication to one’s community, encouraging future generations to carry forward these values.

Rabbi Leon Benarroch’s journey from Casablanca to the UK and his subsequent impact on various communities remain an inspiring testament to his dedication, wisdom, and unwavering commitment to his faith.
