On Sunday, May 4th, the sanctuary of Or Olam Synagogue was filled with music, joy, and heartfelt celebration as the community gathered for a sold-out concert in honor of Cantor Shiree Kidron’s 10th anniversary. The evening marked not only a significant professional milestone but also a moving tribute to a decade of spiritual leadership, artistic excellence, and deep communal connection.
The concert brought together an extraordinary lineup of musical talent, including some of Manhattan’s most celebrated cantorial voices: Cantor Azi Schwartz of Park Avenue Synagogue, Cantor Daniel Singer of Stephen Wise Free Synagogue, Cantor Natasha Hirschhorn of Ansche Chesed, and Cantor Luis Cattan of Sutton Place Synagogue. They were joined by members of the renowned Sheba Ensemble and special musical guests, offering the audience an evening of inspiring performances that blended tradition with innovation.
Rabbi Eugene A. Wernick opened the evening with stirring words of reflection and admiration, likening Cantor Kidron’s journey to that of philosopher Franz Rosenzweig—whose spiritual awakening deeply influenced modern Jewish thought. “We take great pride and give thanks to God for the gift of Shiree Kidron,” Rabbi Wernick said. “This evening is not only a celebration, it is an elevation—one I hope will lift us all to new heights.”

Sandy Meyerson, a member of Or Olam’s Board of Trustees, followed with an emotional tribute. “Ten short years ago, Or Olam was blessed with a voice from above,” she began. “Today, that angel is part of our family. Shiree’s rare, exquisite voice lifts every prayer service into something truly magical. She has transformed our musical programming—introducing concerts like tonight’s that are always a delight.” Meyerson praised both Shiree and her husband, Eli Navon, calling them “a true power couple” whose shared contributions have deeply enriched the community.
Taking the stage with humility and joy, Cantor Shiree Kidron thanked Rabbi Wernick for his moving words and the congregation for their unwavering support. “I think I can make it through tonight without tears,” she said with a smile, “but no promises.” She spoke of the dream that inspired the anniversary concert: to reunite with cherished colleagues and friends and to celebrate through music and fellowship.
Among those honored was Cantor Luis Cattan, immediate past president of the Cantors Assembly and current vice president of the National Zionist Conservative Movement. Shiree expressed that the enduring collaboration between Sutton Place and Or Olam has been a continuous source of joy, inspiration, and shared spiritual growth.
One of the most anticipated moments of the evening was the world premiere of a new composition by acclaimed composer and arranger Oran Eldor, known for his work in Jewish music and on the Broadway stage. Together, Shiree and Eldor presented “Tefilat Haderech” (The Traveler’s Prayer)—a musical interpretation that resonated deeply with the audience. “This song,” Shiree said, “is my thank you to this congregation for the journey we’ve shared—for every moment of joy, learning, prayer, and growth. We’ve become a family.”
She also paid special tribute to Cantor Azi Schwartz, with whom she once worked at Park Avenue Synagogue. “His mentorship and cantorial mastery shaped me in lasting ways,” she said. “I will always be grateful for that time and guidance.”

Cantor Schwartz, deeply touched, shared his heartfelt words of praise: “It’s been a privilege to watch your journey and to celebrate this remarkable milestone with you and Eli. Mazel Tov to you both—and to this beautiful congregation.” They also performed two powerful duets—David Nowakowsky’s classical masterpiece Kol Dodi and the inspirational The Prayer by David Foster—which brought the audience to their feet in a standing ovation. Their strong musical bond continues beyond the stage, with recent collaborations on new recordings and videos that reflect the depth of their shared artistry.
Before concluding, Schwartz reminded the audience of the ongoing suffering in Israel. “There are still 59 hostages being held in Gaza, and their conditions remain unknown. Let us pray for their safe return and for peace to prevail swiftly.” The evening also honored the incredible contributions of the Sheba Ensemble, a group of female musicians with whom Shiree has collaborated for over 15 years. “We’ve recorded, performed, written, and traveled together,” she said. “More than anything, we’ve become a chosen family.”
One of the most moving highlights of the concert was a heartfelt rendition of “Yiddishe Mame,” performed by Cantor Shiree Kidron alongside the women of the Sheba Ensemble. This special performance was dedicated to Barbara Gerber Krasner, Or Olam’s vibrant president, whom Cantor Kidron described as “the Yiddishe Mame of Or Olam.” Barbara’s unwavering dedication and thoughtful leadership have shaped the community in countless ways. As Shiree noted, “You are the beating heart of Or Olam, and your support of our programming has touched every corner of this congregation.”
As the final notes faded and the applause filled the sanctuary, Cantor Shiree Kidron stood before a room overflowing with love, admiration, and gratitude. Her voice, which had guided a community in prayer for a decade, now echoed with heartfelt appreciation. “Thank you for braving the rain, for your warmth, your presence, and your unwavering support,” she said, emotion rising in her voice. “To the sponsors, colleagues, and friends who helped bring this evening to life—thank you for believing in this vision.”
Turning to her husband, Eli Navon, she offered perhaps the most personal tribute of all: “You are my anchor, my partner, and my inspiration.” Your unwavering strength has supported me through every triumph and every challenge.” Thank you for standing beside me, always reminding me of the purpose behind my song.”
This unforgettable night was more than a celebration—it reflected Shiree’s rare ability to blend artistic brilliance with deep spiritual connection. Her music doesn’t simply fill a room; it uplifts souls, builds community, and transforms ordinary moments into sacred ones.
As guests made their way to a delightful wine and dessert reception, the air still resonated with the emotion and harmony of the evening. This night was far more than a tribute—it was a powerful affirmation of Cantor Shiree Kidron’s profound impact through music, prayer, and presence. Though it celebrated ten remarkable years, it also ushered in a future filled with promise and possibility. For Cantor Kidron, the journey is far from over—the next chapter of her inspiring musical and spiritual legacy is just beginning, destined to reach even greater heights.
