This October, Kalaniot Books proudly announces the release of With a Needle and Thread: A Jewish Folktale from Cuba, a heartwarming new picture book that celebrates the strength of family, creativity, and tradition in Cuba’s small but enduring Jewish community. Written by Cuban-Jewish author Jennifer Stempel and illustrated by Libi Axelrod, the book will be available in both English and Spanish editions beginning October 14, 2025.
Set in Santiago de Cuba, the story follows young Romi and her beloved abuelita, who transform an outgrown dress into a series of cherished items—a blanket, a prayer shawl, a wedding canopy—each one carrying the spirit of love, faith, and imagination. Through every stitch, they show how a little creativity and a lot of heart can bring a community together.
A Celebration of Heritage and Resilience
Drawing from her own Cuban-Jewish background, Stempel brings to life the warmth, humor, and faith that define this unique cultural blend. The story highlights the Jewish community’s resilience in Cuba while weaving in local color, language, and family traditions. Familiar Jewish rituals—like a bris, bar mitzvah, and wedding—are paired with Cuban expressions such as lo que sea (“whatever it takes”), symbolizing ingenuity and hope.
A Message for All Generations
At its core, With a Needle and Thread is a story about resourcefulness, sustainability, and intergenerational love. Romi and her grandmother show that even the simplest things can hold deep meaning when infused with care and imagination. Families, educators, and readers of all ages will find in this story a beautiful reminder that creativity and community are timeless values.
Vivid Illustrations Bring the Story to Life
Illustrator Libi Axelrod complements Stempel’s lyrical storytelling with warm, watercolor-style artwork that captures both the beauty of Cuba and the emotional depth of Romi’s world. The art reflects the story’s handmade spirit—each image full of color, texture, and heart.
Perfect for Cultural and Family Reading
