A historic initiative is underway in Morocco, as the government prepares to transform the Dar Moulay Hachem site in Demnate into a center dedicated to Jewish culture.
The project forms part of a wider national effort to safeguard and celebrate the Jewish memory of Morocco, under the leadership of King Mohammed VI.
According to the Moroccan Ministry of Youth, Culture and Communication, the Demnate center is part of an extensive program involving the restoration of Jewish schools, cemeteries, and synagogues throughout the kingdom.
Situated near the recently renovated Jewish cemetery, the new cultural center will aim to promote Jewish heritage and preserve the memory of the Jewish communities that have long coexisted with Morocco’s Muslim population.
A Moroccan official explained that the initiative reflects “a comprehensive strategy led by King Mohammed VI to preserve Jewish memory in Morocco”, supported by royal adviser André Azoulay and the Royal Commission for the Restoration of Jewish Cemeteries. The official noted that Morocco’s approach is guided by a coherent, long-term policy rather than isolated projects.
Léa Ben Shitrit, a leading advocate for Jewish heritage in Morocco and for strengthening ties between Morocco and Israel, welcomed the creation of the Demnate center. She highlighted Morocco’s long-standing tradition of religious coexistence and encouraged Israel to deepen its historical connection with the kingdom. She also called for the reinstatement of direct flights between the two countries, suspended since the Israel–Hamas conflict in October 2023.
“The Moroccan Jewish community remains deeply attached to their country,” she said. “For many, returning to Morocco is part of their DNA. They eagerly await the opportunity to reconnect with the land of their ancestors and to see the resumption of flights.”
The establishment of the Dar Moulay Hachem centre thus represents not only a cultural revival but also a reaffirmation of Morocco’s enduring commitment to its pluralistic heritage and to the peaceful coexistence of its diverse communities.
