A Journey Through Switzerland by Train: The Magic of the Bernina Express

A Journey Through Switzerland by Train: The Magic of the Bernina Express

Few experiences in Europe combine scenery, culture, and convenience quite like traveling through Switzerland by train. During my recent journey across the country, I discovered how Switzerland’s railways connect not only its landscapes but also its stories, people, and heritage. From the glimmering alpine lakes of St. Moritz to the Mediterranean-inspired shores of Lugano, and from the cultural richness of Vevey to the historic vibrancy of Lausanne, Switzerland’s extensive rail network offers travelers a remarkable variety of landscapes and cities in one seamless journey.

Cuban Jews and Aliyah: History, Castro’s Policy, and the Present

Our journey began in Zurich, Switzerland’s bustling financial hub, before venturing southeast into the Engadin Valley. The train ride itself is part of the adventure, passing through picturesque alpine landscapes that reveal why Switzerland is celebrated as one of the most scenic countries in the world. Upon arrival in St. Moritz, travelers are greeted by a town synonymous with luxury, skiing, and alpine charm. The serene lakes, historic architecture, and boutique shopping provide a sophisticated counterpoint to the dramatic peaks surrounding the valley. A short ride away, Pontresina offers a quieter, nature-focused experience, with glacier hikes and alpine trails that showcase the region’s raw beauty.

The Bernina Express: A UNESCO World Heritage Journey

One of the highlights of my Swiss rail adventure was traveling on the Bernina Express, connecting St. Moritz to Tirano and onward to Lugano. From the moment I stepped aboard, I knew this was more than a train ride—it was an experience. The panoramic windows framed a constantly changing canvas of glaciers, alpine lakes, and charming villages that seemed to leap from a storybook.

As we departed St. Moritz, the Engadin Valley stretched beneath us, a patchwork of snow-capped peaks and glassy lakes reflecting the sunlight. The train wound past frozen rivers and pine-covered slopes, and I even caught glimpses of herds of ibex navigating the rocky terrain with astonishing agility. Passing through the Domleschg region, I was struck by the sheer number of castles dotting the hillsides—an extraordinary concentration I had never seen before.

The Solis Viaduct was a breathtaking moment. Suspended 85 meters above a deep gorge, the view of cascading waters and sheer cliffs below made me hold my breath. Entering the Albula Valley, waterfalls tumbled alongside the tracks, colorful meadows spread across the slopes, and wooden chalets perched on hillsides like painted miniatures. Every turn brought a new surprise, and moving between viewing areas allowed me to feel fully immersed in the landscape.

By the time we descended toward Tirano, the scenery softened into vineyards and sunlit valleys, signaling our approach to the Italian-speaking region of Ticino.

Lugano: Where the Alps Meet the Mediterranean

Continuing south, the journey led to Lugano, where palm-lined streets and sparkling waters provide a striking contrast to the alpine grandeur I had just witnessed. The city blends Swiss precision with Italian flair, offering lakeside promenades, mountain excursions, and a vibrant cultural life.

For travelers seeking Jewish heritage experiences, the Chabad Jewish Center of Lugano offers a chance to connect with a thriving local community through Shabbat dinners, educational programs, and insights into the history and resilience of Jewish life in southern Switzerland.

Vevey: Culture and Cuisine by the Lake

Next on the itinerary was Vevey, nestled on the northern shores of Lake Geneva. Accessible via scenic train routes along the lake, Vevey is a haven for culture, gastronomy, and history. Visitors can explore Chaplin’s World, a museum dedicated to Charlie Chaplin, wander the historic Old Town, or sample wines from the UNESCO-listed Lavaux vineyards. The combination of lakeside charm, culinary experiences, and cultural attractions makes Vevey a highlight for travelers seeking both relaxation and enrichment.

Lausanne: The Elegant Finale

The final stop on this journey was Lausanne, just a short train ride from Vevey. Lausanne’s steep hills, historic streets, and lakeside promenades create an atmosphere that is both dynamic and picturesque. Known as the Olympic Capital, the city offers museums, galleries, and vibrant cultural events, while its Jewish community adds another layer of historical and cultural depth. Visitors can stroll through the Old Town, enjoy lakeside cafés, or explore nearby vineyards—creating a multifaceted experience that blends natural beauty with intellectual and cultural discovery.

The Essence of Swiss Rail Travel

Traveling by train in Switzerland is more than a mode of transport—it is an immersive way to connect with the country’s diverse regions. The trains are punctual, comfortable, and often equipped with panoramic cars that allow travelers to take in the landscape in unparalleled detail. Each leg of the journey reveals a different facet of Swiss life: the alpine adventure of St. Moritz, the Mediterranean charm of Lugano, the cultural richness of Vevey, and the historical vibrancy of Lausanne.

The Bernina Express transforms travel into something more than movement—it becomes a celebration of connection, beauty, and discovery. From soaring viaducts to sunlit vineyards, it reveals the essence of Switzerland in motion. For anyone visiting the country, this journey isn’t just a highlight—it’s the heart of the Swiss experience.

Book a seat, gaze out the window, and let the journey itself become the highlight of your Swiss adventure.
